Power Plant Boilers & Refinery Exchangers
Boiler & Heat Exchanger Tube Inspection Scope
Electromagnetic & Ultrasonic Internal Rotary Testing (IRIS, ECT, RFT, NFT)
Primary NDT Techniques:IRISECTRFTNFT
Targeted Damage Mechanisms
- Internal Erosion-Corrosion
- Pitting
- Steam Cut In Shell Side
- Stress Corrosion Cracking
Key Inspection Challenges Resolved
- Heat exchangers contain hundreds to thousands of small-diameter tubes.
- Different alloys (carbon steel, stainless, titanium, brass) require different electromagnetic testing physics.
- Deposit buildup inside tubes can obscure wall thickness readings.
Standard Field Inspection Workflow
1
Technique Selection by Alloy
Select Eddy Current (ECT) for non-ferrous tubes (copper/brass/titanium), Remote Field (RFT) for carbon steel, or IRIS Ultrasonic for 100% wall profile quantification.
2
High-Speed Tube Pulling
Insert motorized probe pusher to pull probes through 100% or representative sample of tube bundle at 1 m/s.
3
Defect Mapping & Plugging Plan
Map tube wall loss percentage (0-20%, 20-40%, 40-60%, >60%). Issue immediate plugging list for tubes exceeding maximum safe wall loss limit.
Recommended Hardware & Probes
- Eddyfi Ectane 2 Multi-Technology Probe System
- Olympus IRIS Rotary Ultrasonic Probe System
Governing Inspection Standards
- ASME Section V Article 8 & 11
- ASTM E426 / E571
- TEMA Standards
